STATEMENT

“The Divine Matrix” is one of a series of mobile constructions of weavings. In the series, objects used as symbols- seeds, feathers, seashells, beads, stones, crystals, other materials- are woven, knotted, or netted onto frameworks holding fibers in symbolic colors.

The central supporting form of the mobile “The Divine Matrix” is constructed of a thread-wrapped 7” macrame hoop circle representing a divine source that is beyond duality. It is interwoven with a triangle form representing female being: “The Divine Matrix” symbolizes divine energy as female energy-of-being creating the natural world.

This triangle-within-circle framework represents the metaphysical realm. The form is supported by silver embroidery thread representing energy-of-consciousness. This thread depends by lark’s head loops in double lines attached to a hanger loop at three points. The three sets of lines support three thread-wrapped 5” circles that represent the physical realms of Earth, Water, and Fire; the physical realm of the Air-all-around is represented by feathers that are woven into part of one of these same supporting lines of silver thread. These silver lines extending from the apex of the mobile unite the entire mobile, just as consciousness unites mind.

The lines in double sets that extend to support the three circles in their centers loop down and around the threads crossing the circles. The crossing threads are the last parts of the fibers that wrap the circles. The double sets of lines then loop back up to the 7” circle. They are fastened there with square knots, then separated, with one line extending down into the center of each 5” circle to hold an object symbolic of that realm. The other line returns to the 7” triangle-within-circle of the metaphysical realm to cross it, the three crossing lines creating a tiny triangle in the center of the large triangle, their ends then attached to the rim of the large circle and let down between the three 5” circles.

The large triangle was created with the ends of the white flax thread that wraps the 7” circle. The triangle is wrapped with silver thread, and the triangle-within-circle area of this metaphysical realm is filled with waves of very fine tulle netting loosely attached with fine silver lines- the visible suggesting the invisible. The fine lines of silver thread are the untwined ends of the threads wrapping the hanger loop and its swivel attachment.

More of these same ends of fine lines support a clear, faceted bead, symbol of clear consciousness. These lines from the apex of the mobile pass through the tiny central triangle to join the area of the metaphysical realm to the physical realm, connecting it to the triangular cone outlined by the main supporting lines of silver thread. The triangular cone represents the rising of transformative energy-of-consciousness.

In addition to the symbolism of the overall structure of “The Divine Matrix,” the colors of fiber and the objects attached to the mobile are symbolic. The white flax thread wrapping all the circles represents the white light that includes all colors, just as the light of consciousness infuses all matter: In my belief, consciousness creates matter- consciousness and matter and energy are one.

Continuing with color symbolism, green (linen and viscose) fibers represent Earth, with multicolored blue (cotton) embroidery thread included in the arrangement of the warps to represent the water areas of the land. Blue (linen and viscose) fibers arranged with the multicolored blue thread represent Water, with green interspersed to represent vegetation in water. Golden-yellow (linen and viscose) fibers and shimmering yellow silk fibers represent Fire. All colors are enhanced by lines of silver thread that create auras of reflected light representing consciousness in all of creation. Silver threads with crystal beads represent continuity of creation consciousness between metaphysical and physical realms.

The Earth circle has central symbols of a mica rock and three small beads of stone, materials created by earth processes of mountain-building and metamorphosis by fire and/or water. Additional beads of turquoise, and clear glass, along with a string of apple seeds, and a string of wheat seeds, progeny of Earth, are knotted into warp fiber ends.

The Water circle has central symbols of seashells: a dosinia and a cowry. Knotted into the warp fiber ends are snail shells, clam shells, and mother-of-pearl shell “beads.” Multicolored novelty thread (mixed cotton and synthetic fibers) is spaced among the blue warp threads to suggest creatures and plants of the sea.

The Fire circle’s central symbols are a sunstar-shaped crystal, and a large seed representing seeds of plants that need fire to germinate. Turquoise beads and glass beads, artifacts of fire, are knotted into the warp fiber ends. Small, semi-translucent/clear/ iridescent/ beads are knotted along the fiber lengths to suggest flickering.

Air, as mentioned above, is represented by feathers “floating” in the air all around the mobile- and the viewer! Canada goose feathers are woven into the upper part of the three ending sections of the main support lines of silver thread. Below the feathers, a shell, a semi-translucent bead, and a turquoise bead are knotted together into the last part of these lines of silver thread which originated at the apex of the mobile, a symbolic expression of connection and continuity in the Earth, Water, Fire, and Air realms of meaning and consciousness- as is the movement of the mobile.

Of course, the great delight of a mobile consists in its movement. If “The Divine Matrix” is touched by a breeze, or if the hanger loop is touched to create a gentle spin, rotation begins a twirling motion for the whole. The twirling dance of the whole continues in time with individual twirls of motion in each part, moving and changing, dancing, until all come to rest, waiting for renewal.
